WRISC is kicking off our 5th Annual Invasive Species Trade-Up Days event on May 5th!

Invasive Species Trade-Up Days is an opportunity for landowners to remove invasive shrubs and bring them to a designated drop-off event where WRISC will properly dispose of the shrub. In exchange for the invasive shrub, WRISC will provide the landowner with a voucher, valid for the purchase of a native plant from a local greenhouse or plant sale to replace the invasive that was removed. In 2025, vouchers are worth $10/each with a limit of ten vouchers... that's $100 towards native plants!
Partners make it possible!
WRISC's Partners have been critical in expanding our program and because of them we can offer seven drop-off opportunities in all five counties in our service area!
The calendar of drop-offs and locations is included below.
In addition to the multiple drop-off options, we've also been able to partner with 9 local greenhouses and plant sales! This provides participants plenty of shopping options when looking to redeem those vouchers for native plants!
Native plant alternatives
Replacing invasive shrubs with native plants is a great way to improve our landscapes and create or enhance habitat for wildlife and pollinators alike. That's the goal of Invasive Trade-Up Days - to reduce the number of invasive shrubs on the landscape (by disposing of them properly) and increase the number of native plants on the landscape.
There are many amazing shrubs, wildflowers, and grasses that are native to our region and provide important habitat services to our wildlife, pollinators, and us! However, trying to select native plants can be a bit overwhelming, so we've narrowed down a list of native alternatives that grow well in our region, are tolerant of different habitat conditions, and are most commonly available from local plant suppliers.
Some of our favorites include Serviceberry (shrub), Ninebark (shrub), Bee Balm (wildflower), and Butterfly Milkweed (wildflower). (Shown below)
